Design IV / Jean-Marc Abcarius & Christopher Burns / Spring 2010
It is extraordinary that until recently, Beirut had no public libraries. A dedicated and independent group of women has established in recent years a network of local mini-libraries to address this lack. Our design project will establish a link between a local educational institute and a hypothetical new public branch library in Gemmayze. Specific design issues to be addressed here are: What is the nature of a public library in the 21st century? Why is a contemporary library significant? How does the building relate to its urban environment, in particular to the imposing, historic buildings of the adjacent educational complex?
Project 01
We begin with the study of the building typology of the library, working together in small groups. Analyze in drawings and models a selected project. A two-week project, with group presentation, comparison and discussion.
Project 02
For the second project, the work will again be in small groups. Examine, observe and analyze creatively the existing urban site and context. A two-week project, with group presentation and discussion.
Project 03
Reinterpreting the palette of design strategies discovered and using the information gathered from our site analysis, begin your individual semester project for the design of an urban branch library. The site specifics and functional program will be announced. Our intention is to examine comprehensively in a small public building, the architectural qualities of concept, urban context, massing, functional program, circulation, interior space, exterior articulation, structure, material, and building technology. Attendance at the group presentations and discussions is required.
