Mayda Freije

Mayda’s solid New York experience involved working with high-profile agencies such as Union Design, Pentagram and Futurebrand. She holds a diversity of talents including concept development, graphic design, illustration, Arabic typography and Arabic applications. She is interested in the idea of diversity in culture and the idea of belonging, addressing the challenges as opportunities for creative exploration and focused communication. In the course of her career she has produced several award-winning projects and has been featured in numerous publications. Her art murals were also chosen for the ‘Building Dreams’ Children’s Playground Improvement Project in New York City.
Upon relocating to Beirut in 1995, Mayda established her own studio, and later joined with Communica Design, NY, with whom she’s been working since 2010, as creative director and director of Arabic relations.
Mayda has been teaching since 2004 at the American University of Beirut (AUB), the American University of Science and Technology (AUST) and Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Art (ALBA) and since fall 2022 she joined our faculty at LAU. She is also member of Assabil, The Friends of Public Libraries Association founded in 1997, promoting reading to the young through storytelling and activities at various public libraries in Lebanon. Mayda is an advocate of ‘inclusive’ designs and books for children with additional needs, initiating hands-on workshops on creating stories, choosing proper imagery and language, and engaging children in reading.
