Myrna Semaan
She is currently the Deputy Director of the Center for Climate Change, Water Security and Environmental Sustainability at the American University of Iraq in Baghdad. Through her position, she is integrating climate and environmental sciences into academic programs, research, and governmental collaborations. In 2022-2023, she worked with the iNGO Mercy Corps as the Middle East Regional Advisor for Water and Climate, where she built the office capacity on climate action in its 6 operating countries in the region.
In a 30-years academic profession, she held the positions of dean and chairperson of the Faculty of Applied Sciences (2002-2012). She tutored for master’s and Ph.D. theses, and acted as dissertation jury member. Alongside, she developed and implemented a number of projects for conservation of marine and terrestrial biodiversity from creation of nature reserves, to ecotourism, community capacity building, and other. As environmental consultant, she conducted environmental impact assessments for a diversity of projects; she also developed reports for government and international agencies.
Her love for writing resulted in 6 books, including a books series on spaces and species co-authored with her husband Dr. Ricardus Haber. She holds a Ph.D. in Systematics and Conservation from the University of Reading-UK, followed by Post Doc/research fellowship with the University of California- Berkeley, USA. She is a Plant Author recognized in IPNI database for discovering new plant species; she is also a Fulbright Scholar and the Vice Chair of the IUCN-CCC (International Union for Conservation of Nature-Climate Crisis Commission) for West Asia.
