Dr. Ziad Mawlawi is a seasoned academician, corporate advisor, senior design manager and design principal with more than 25 years of professional design experience. Mawlawi holds a Doctorate degree in Art & Design Administration/ Education from Columbia University (1995), a master’s degree in Interior Architecture (1988) and a master’s degree in Architectural History (1992) both from the University of Oregon. Mawlawi joined LAU in 1996 as an assistant professor of interior design and architectural history and taught design studios, architectural and art history, technical design, theory and visual culture. In 2003, Mawlawi participated in establishing the Institute of Islamic Art & Architecture which he directed until 2005. In 2005, he was seconded by LAU as the Dean of the Scientific College of Design (SCD) in Muscat, Oman; after which he moved into corporate design advisory and design management in the Gulf. In 2021, Mawlawi rejoined the academic ranks at LAU and is currently Associate Professor of Practice and in charge of directing the MA Program in Islamic Art & Architecture.
