Dressed for Dissent: Activist Fashion in Palestine

LAU Beirut campus, AKSOB 903

The Institute of Art in the Arab World is hosting a talk by Roberto Filippello titled Dressed for Dissent: Activist Fashion in Palestine.

In this presentation, Assistant Professor of Media and Culture at the University of Amsterdam, Roberto Filippello, will share excerpts from his forthcoming book on Palestinian fashion. The talk will highlight how young designers and image makers use creative collaboration to express political awareness and build communities amid the Israeli occupation. It will explore how ‘decolonial fashion’ intersects with environment, race, and gender, moving beyond nationalist narratives of the liberation struggle. Using case studies from the West Bank and Gaza, the talk will demonstrate how Palestinian fashion serves as a form of creative activism, envisioning a free Palestine and imagining social justice.
