Mapping Cultural Landscapes: From Beirut to Diriyah

The Institute for Environmental Studies and Research (iesr) Participates in the Diriyah Global Seminar (DGS) 2024, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

The Institute of Environmental Studies and Research (iesr) participated in the Diriyah Global Seminar 2024, a dynamic event dedicated to exploring the human, cultural, and social development of Diriyah in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This gathering brought together leading scholars, professionals, and innovators to discuss diverse perspectives on Diriyah’s history and development.

Representing the Institute for Environmental Studies and Research (iesr) at the Lebanese American University, Professors Roula Khoury, Carine Lteif and David Aouad presented their paper entitled “Beyond Materiality, Mud as a Living Material in Heritage Preservation.” Their contribution highlighted the role of mud, a traditional construction material, as a living material embodying cultural significance and continuity.

Additionally, and within the same panel, “Mapping Cultural Landscapes: From Beirut to Diriyah,” LAU alumna Daniella Maamari (B.Arch. ’17) showcased the Beirut Living Heritage Atlas, a project developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The project introduces innovative approaches to documenting and preserving cultural heritage.
